Setting Them Straight
AJ Robinson

When I watch one of the plethora of recent horror movies, I often roll my eyes at certain scenes. The stupidity of the characters, their insistence on doing the dumbest things on the face of the earth. It’s so offensive to my intelligence, it’s almost painful.

Inane challenges to legitimate election.

That’s how I’ve felt recently when I hear the media pundits whine and complain about the Republicans and Trump. In the case of Trump, it’s not merely his inane challenges to the election, it’s that he is doing nothing about the coronavirus. Deaths are piling up faster than hospitals can deal with, medical personnel are reaching their breaking point; some are literally walking away from their positions, and the epidemic shows no signs of abating anytime soon.

In the case of the Republicans, people are complaining they’re making the whole situation worse by siding with Trump. Some are actively working to help him. Most refuse to acknowledge Biden as the president-elect and pressure the administration to move forward with the transition.

After all, we have a pandemic to fight, an economy to save and millions of people in need of help. Do any of the Republicans think of any of these issues? No, their concerns are saving their own skins.

That’s when the media and pundits become incredulous and wonder what the Republicans are thinking. “Don’t they realize the damage they’re doing to their brand?” people ask. “Don’t they understand that their party will be crippled for generations to come?”

Mine eyes rolled. That’s when I realized I needed to write this article to set these people straight. Mind you, not the Republicans. Oh no, they know with absolute clarity and definition of purpose what they’re doing.

No, I need to set the reporters, the pundits and the Democrats straight as to what’s going on. So, here we go. Let’s see if it sticks.

I’m sorry to be so harsh, but you need to shut up. The Republicans are doing what they always do, at least of late, they are winning; they are keeping power. Let’s review, shall we?

Mitch, Susan, Lindsey and pretty much all the rest all won re-election. Also, take note, they didn’t merely win, they won big; most won in a landslide. As for Trump, he lost, but not by much and think about the people that voted for him.

Despite his lies.

Four year of his lies and they still picked him over Biden. Now, we’re facing runoff elections in Georgia. Again, the pundits are saying the Republicans are risking control of the Senate over their current antics

No, they’re not. For some mystery, which I cannot fathom, voters will side with the Republicans, at least when it comes to the Senate. Moscow Mitch knows with absolute certainty that he can do whatever he wishes; the voters will still support him.

Moscow Mitch blocked the final Obama pick for the Supreme Court. Did he pay a price for that? No. He rammed through the Trump picks, one literally within days of the election; did he pay a price?

Moscow was re-elected in one of those landslides. He ignores the needs of his own constituents, coal miners who came to him asking for help; did he pay a price? Nope, and I’m willing to bet those same miners voted for him in record numbers.

In Kentucky, his opponent was a Democrat and woman, which meant there was no way any of them would vote for her. When Georgia sends two more republicans to Congress, which I fully expect the state to do, the Republicans will have control of the Senate; what will Mitch do?

He’ll try to block everything Biden wants to do. He’ll use the excuse that Biden isn’t the true president that he stole the election and thus his actions justified. Fox News and other conservative outlets will cheer him, the Republican base will support him, and in 2022 the party will gain even more of a majority in Congress.

Biden will not be able to pass much legislation. The nation will sink into the morass of depression. Oh, and Biden will get the blame.

Please, all reporters, pundits, think tank thinkers, editorialists and former political figures, please-please stop saying the Republicans are going to pay some terrible price for their downright criminal activity. In many cases, their actions violate the Constitution, that piece of paper they claim to love, and some border on treason.

Yet, it doesn’t matter. Mitch, Lindsey and all the rest can do anything they want, and, again, for some reason I just cannot ascertain, the voters will line up in droves to not merely put them back in office. No, they’ll hand over their money, their health, their security and future and the lives of their parents and children.

What do you think?

Right now, news stories of how Emily Murphy, head of the General Services Agency, has not acknowledged the Biden win, abound. Reporters whine of this violating the law and we need to ensure she does her job, correctly. People take it up with the Republicans. What’s their reaction to, yet another, violation of the law by the Trump Administration? Crickets. Will they pay a price for their inaction?

Combining the gimlet-eye of Philip Roth with the precisive mind of Lionel Trilling, AJ Robinson writes about what goes bump in the mind, of 21st century adults. Raised in Boston, with summers on Martha's Vineyard, AJ now lives in Florida. Working, again, as an engineeer, after years out of the field due to 2009 recession and slow recovery, Robinson finds time to write. His liberal, note the small "l," sensibilities often lead to bouts of righteous indignation, well focused and true. His teen vampire adventure novel, "Vampire Vendetta," will publish in 2020. Robinson continues to write books, screenplays and teleplays and keeps hoping for that big break.
