The Second Impeachment
AJ Robinson

A fool for a client is part of an old axiom. The full line suggests that anyone that represents him- or herself in court has a fool for a client. In this case the fools are the jurors, not the accused.

Second Impeachment Trial.

I refer to the second impeachment trial of Donald J T****. Just recently it was announced t his entire defense team resigned because they wouldn’t promote the lie that their client won the 2020 Presidential Election by a landslide. The media, politicians and pundits are all wagging their tongues as they wonder how T**** can possibly mount a defense. His new legal team submitted a brief defence brief, fourteen pages in length and full of typos, misspellings and grammatical errors, reports the media.

Let’s be clear on one little item. Trump is going to be acquitted, again. Of this there is no doubt.

I am more than willing to make a sizeable wager on the outcome and offer odds of twenty to one. I’ll even go a bit further.

T**** will not have to put forth any defense at all. In fact, he could waltz into the Senate, in his most casual summer attire, sit, put his feet up on the table, chug a beer and burp, as he confesses to the crime. He could tell the entire Congress that yes, he did, in fact, call together a seditious mob, enflame their passions, and then sent them off to attack the Capitol.

He was hoping they’d hang Pence. Shoot Pelosi. Terrorize or injure members of Congress.

Ultimately, he would intimidate members of Congress into declaring him president, perhaps for life. He could say and do all this and more. It wouldn’t make any difference.

Now, at this point I wish I could be generous and forgiving toward the Republicans. I can’t. No, I must be blunt and quite direct.

The Republicans are traitors. They’re the worst kind of traitors, that is, cowards. It’s not as if they’re doing this because they feel some sort of higher calling; they aren’t.

One of my favourite quotes, from Edmund Burke, in a s Speech he gave to the Electors of Bristol on 3 November 1774. I’ve used it before in my articles is pertinent. “Your representative owes you, not his industry only, but his judgment; … he betrays you instead of serving you if he sacrifices it to your opinion.”

Doing what’s right.

I always took this to mean that a member of Congress needs to do what is right, not what is merely politically advantageous or expedite at the time. We saw this during the war against Iraq, when so many people were in favor of invading Iraq despite knowing Hussein had nothing to do with 9/11. Even Hillary Clinton voted for the war, merely because she knew she could curry favour with voters. People, such as Michael Moore and Barrack Obama, opposed the war because they knew it was wrong and they were willing to take the blame and await the judgment of history.

The Republicans in Congress are not opposed to convicting T**** because of some high morals or ethics. Their excuse, that he is now out of office, is lame and a cheap escape. Pity no one calls them on it.

Republicans toe the company line on every news programme. No reporter, no constituent or anyone else will call them on it. ever. They won’t vote to convict him for one of two reasons: either they completely support T**** or they’re totally terrified of him. Either way, they are guilty of treason.

What saddens and scares me is that the media, pundits and the voters will let Republicans get away with it. Come the 2022 election, it’s almost guaranteed the Republicans will win control of Congress, both the House and the Senate. At that point, they will probably impeach Biden, but not have the votes to remove him from office, thank God.

Republicans, if they regain majority status, will oppose and stop the entire Biden agenda. Then they will complain he doesn’t do anything. They will call him an imperial president for signing executive orders.

This has a familiar ring? Biden will get nothing done. Oh, and if a seat opens on the Supreme Court, he won’t get to fill it, not with Moscow Mitch back as majority leader.

Think I’m wrong? Care to make a bet?

As much as I hope I’m not right, I just don’t see it going down any other way. Our only hope is that Trump is exposed as the criminal and traitor he is and his support crumbles. What are the chances of that? Anyone want to give odds?

Combining the gimlet-eye of Philip Roth with the precisive mind of Lionel Trilling, AJ Robinson writes about what goes bump in the mind, of 21st century adults. Raised in Boston, with summers on Martha's Vineyard, AJ now lives in Florida. Working, again, as an engineeer, after years out of the field due to 2009 recession and slow recovery, Robinson finds time to write. His liberal, note the small "l," sensibilities often lead to bouts of righteous indignation, well focused and true. His teen vampire adventure novel, "Vampire Vendetta," will publish in 2020. Robinson continues to write books, screenplays and teleplays and keeps hoping for that big break.
